The Canadian Church of Christ’s traditional GO! Weekend—now in its eighth year of community-wide clean-up projects here—is packing up the shovels and work gloves and heading up US 83 this year to help the tornado-stricken town of Perryton. The date that was set for Canadian’s GO! Weekend—Saturday, July 22—has now been dedicated to Perryton’s recovery.

GO! Weekend is simply about two things: Loving others and displaying the goodness of Jesus.

CHURCH OF CHRIST MINISTER JAKE PERKINS

Pastor Jake Perkins announced the church’s decision this week to shift its immediate focus to its northern neighbors, whose community was shattered on June 15 by a deadly EF3 twister that killed three residents, injured dozens more, leveled an entire mobile home park, and decimated sections of its downtown area.

Perkins said their goal is to help with the ongoing clean-up in Perryton. While the project details are still in development, he promised that there will be work for all ages and abilities.

“GO! Weekend is simply about two things: Loving others and displaying the goodness of Jesus,” Perkins said following last year’s transformational day of work and fellowship, which encompassed everything from street cleaning and fence building to house painting and meal making. “This past weekend, we found a renewed love for our community. Each service team was focused, not on just completing the task, but on taking time to bless someone else.”

Blessings will not be wasted on the city of Perryton, where a massive cleanup and recovery effort is underway, and can be expected to continue for months, if not years.

Perkins also announced that GO! Weekend will double its impact in 2023 by hosting both summer and fall service days. Saturday, October 7, has been reserved for Canadian-based beautification projects.
