Canyon, TX – Dove Creek Equine Rescue (DCER) will be hosting the first of its Monthly Grief Workshops this Sunday, March 17th from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm at Dove Creek Ranch, 16201 Gordon Cummings Road, six miles west of Canyon.

Grief can take many forms – from the loss of loved ones, relationships, and possessions to shattered dreams. The devastating wildfires that swept through the Texas Panhandle have added a fresh layer of sorrow as our community copes with the loss of homes, livelihoods, and cherished landscapes.

Navigating grief is an arduous journey and doing it alone can be overwhelming. Dove Creek’s Monthly Grief Group offers a unique approach as compassionate horses help participants explore coping practices and foster a sense of community among fellow travelers on this shared path.

Dove Creek Equine Rescue Founder Laurie Higgins-Kerley and her team of Led by Horses Coaches offer their guidance and compassion in a safe space with the help of the Rescue’s resident horses. Dove Creek Ranch is a peaceful place of solace for those who are grieving to reflect, establish meaningful connections, and uncover the treasures within the grief experience.

The session price is $50; however, thanks to a generous donor, scholarships are available. Deborah Carson of Fredericksburg, Texas was heartbroken when she learned about the recent wildfires that burned more than one million acres in the Panhandle. Through family members living in Amarillo, Ms. Carson learned about Dove Creek’s Grief Workshops and wanted to help anyone grieving losses in our area. Her generous donation will enable everyone who needs financial assistance to attend one or more Grief Workshops in 2024.

Higgins-Kerley expressed her gratitude for the scholarship donation, “We are so grateful that Deborah opened her heart to people in the Panhandle who are grieving. Research shows that equine-assisted healing can help people move through their loss. Our Led by Horses equine-assisted learning and coaching program is designed to partner people in pain with our healing herd to find clarity and healing.”

Dove Creek Equine Rescue was founded by Higgins-Kerley in 2012 and has rescued 242 unwanted and neglected animals. The mission of the nonprofit is to restore the dignity, purpose, and wholeness of unwanted horses who need a second chance in life and humans who need healing and direction by providing compassionate care, connection, and education.
