On Oct. 1, 1957, in an column by editor Wes Izzard called “From A to Izzard,” a letter from Ab Gunter of Pampa was shared in response to prior talks about fall colors in Colorado and New Mexico. In the letter, Gunter declared, “You color-blind birds ought to fall off the Caprock and look at the cottonwoods at Miami, Mobeetie, Wheeler, or any of the other little towns—maybe Canadian.”
