New signs installed by TxDOT last week advise area motorists that construction will begin tomorrow, Tuesday, May 16, on the long-awaited US 60 Highway Improvement Project. The project extends from Birch Street on the south edge of Canadian to the intersection with Main Street in the center of downtown.

The 0.850-mile project will cost $13,405,600, and is expected to span 305 working days. The project’s scope includes rehabilitation of the existing roadway, installation of new concrete storm sewers and box culverts, curb, sidewalks and driveways, and new signal lights. It will also include bicycle lanes and pedestrian improvements.

In addition, the city of Canadian has funded the replacement of old streetlights with new decorative lights and banner brackets throughout the project area. That lighting is a nod to the city’s comprehensive plan—adopted in 2016—and addresses the goal of creating an attractive corridor and entryway to the city along US 60, welcoming visitors to stop and stay here. The cost—$340,000—has already been paid.

This project was preceded by extensive work relocating city water and sewer lines that run beneath US 60, which was completed in January 2023.
