Martha Elizabeth “Beth” Beene Morris, 93, of Vega, entered heaven Saturday, June 22, 2024. 

Beth will be available for viewing from 10 am to 8 pm, Tuesday, June 25, with a visitation from 5 to 7 pm at Vega Methodist Church, 208 North 9th Street. Services will be at 10 am, Wednesday, June 26, at the Vega Methodist Church, with Roger Morris and Guy Walker of Barn Church officiating. The burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery, Vega, Texas.

A Hemphill County Grand Jury returned three felony indictments last Thursday following a hearing in 31st Judicial District Court.

Francisco Peralta, 42, was indicted on a February 9, 2024, charge of driving while intoxicated—a third-degree felony offense. Peralta had prior convictions in Castro County on a 1999 DWI charge, and in 2013 for an offense related to the operation of a motor vehicle. His bond was set at $15,000.

The Smokehouse Creek Fire started about a mile north of Stinnett in Hutchinson County on the morning of Monday, February 26, when a decayed Xcel Energy pole broke off at the ground, downing the power line and igniting the grasses below.

CANADIAN -- U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Farm Service Agency (FSA) Hemphill County Executive Director Janee Cross today announced that Hemphill County is accepting applications for the Emergency Conservation Program (ECP) to address damages from the Smokehouse Creek Wildfire that occurred in February. ECP signup will begin on April 9, 2024, and end on June 10, 2024.

CANADIAN---The 2024 Hemphill County Texas A&M AgriLife Beef Cattle Conference will be held April 23-24, 2024, Jones Pavilion, in Canadian, Texas. The Tuesday and Wednesday beef cattle event has established itself as one of the nation’s leading sources for cutting edge, critical information for beef cattle producers.

A Hemphill County grand jury convened here on Thursday, February 22, and returned with four indictments.

Early voting in the March 5 Democratic and Republican primaries will kick off next Tuesday at the Hemphill County Courthouse.

Local and district offices that will be on the 2024 primary and general election ballot include those of Hemphill County Tax Assessor/Collector, Hemphill County Attorney , Hemphill County Commissioner (Precincts 1 and 3), Hemphill County Sheriff, and 31st District Attorney.

Extension agents Tanya Holloway and Hannah Sell demonstrated low carb smoothie and snack recipes for the Hemphill County Seniors group on January 11. On Thursday, February 29, Laurie McAfee will present changes in Medicare for 2024. Senior meetings are held at 11:30 am every Thursday in the Heritage Community Center at Mesa View Senior Living Center. Lunch is provided at no cost. All seniors in Hemphill County are welcome.
