Massive wildfires ignited by power lines

Two wildfires that burned more than 1 million acres in the Panhandle were caused by downed power lines, according to the Texas A&M Forest Service.

Juan Rodriguez, with the service, told the Texas Standard that its law enforcement investigators had concluded their probe into the source of the Smokehouse Creek and Windy Deuce fires.

Heath Hayden announces run for CISD school board seat

I am excited to announce my candidacy for the Canadian ISD Board of Trustees. I have long been an advocate for education and Canadian’s reputation for its academic excellence was a major reason for my decision to locate here in 2011. Polls open at 7 am tomorrow in party primary elections

Voting in the March 5 Democratic and Republican primaries begins at 7 am tomorrow, Tuesday, March 5, and ends at 7 pm. Hemphill County Clerk Sylvia Guerrero announced on Friday that some polling places had been consolidated due to power outages at rural voting locations. Voters in Pct. 201 will cast their ballots at the City Hall and Municipal Auditorium, located at 2 Main Street, and Voters in Pcts. 301, 302 and 303 will all cast ballots at the Baker Elementary School, located at 723 Cheyenne Avenue.

HCSO reports autopsy results in death of Damaris Jara

Hemphill County Sheriff Brent Clapp reported today that he had received a copy of the preliminary autopsy results in the February 29 death of 23-year-old Damaris Jara.

Following an autopsy, Dr. Thomas Parsons of South Plains Forensic Pathology ruled the death was due to natural causes. The cause of death was determined to be a subarachnoid hemorrhage, caused by a ruptured cerebral artery aneurysm.
