Landowners and agricultural producers are beginning the recovery process by assessing damages left in the wake of the Smokehouse Creek fire and other fires in the Texas Panhandle.

AUSTIN – On Tuesday, March 12, Speaker Dade Phelan announced the creation of an Investigative Committee on the Panhandle Wildfires. Representative Ken King will serve as the Chair of this committee which will include Representatives Burrows and Hunter, as well as community members Jason Abraham and Ashley Cash.

Massive wildfires ignited by power lines
Two wildfires that burned more than 1 million acres in the Panhandle were caused by downed power lines, according to the Texas A&M Forest Service.
Juan Rodriguez, with the service, told the Texas Standard that its law enforcement investigators had concluded their probe into the source of the Smokehouse Creek and Windy Deuce fires.

Natural disasters are traumatic events, and the wildfires that began in the Texas Panhandle on Feb. 27 are no exception.

I have long been an advocate for education and Canadian’s reputation for its academic excellence was a major reason for my decision to locate here in 2011.
