Early voting begins tomorrow in heavily-contested races for school and hospital boards
Early voting begins tomorrow, Tuesday, April 22, in the May 3 Hemphill County Hospital District and Canadian Independent School District board elections. Thirteen candidates are vying for nine open seats, setting up contested races for both school and hospital boards.
The candidates for three open seats on the Hemphill County Hospital District Board of Directors are incumbents Whitney Jones, Colby Leach and Cory Pittman, as well as former board member Jesse Hanes and newcomer Travis Macias.

Six candidates have signed up for three open seats on the Canadian Independent School District Board of Trustees. Ashton Macias and Bryan Bartlett both filed for re-election. Chase Smyth, Shannon Woodrum, Tatum Pennington and Kent Sisco each announced as candidates, as well. Long-time board member Andy Orrell chose not to seek re-election.

With no contested races for either the Mayor or City Council, the City of Canadian has cancelled its election. Terrill Bartlett signed up for another term as Mayor. Jonilyn Hanes filed for re-election to the City Council, while fellow council member Matt Cipollone opted out, leaving one seat unfilled.
Applications for ballots by mail in both elections should be mailed to: (Hemphill County voters) Sylvia Guerrero, Hemphill County Clerk, PO Box 867, Canadian, TX 79014. Lipscomb County voters in the school board election (Precincts 106 and 404) should submit their applications for ballots by mail to: Chrissy Dunn, Lipscomb County Election Clerk, PO Box 70, Lipscomb, TX 79056. They must be received no later than the close of business on April 22.
Early voting begins on Tuesday, April 22, and ends on Tuesday, April 29. Early ballots for all voters in the school board election may be cast at the Canadian ISD Administration Office, located at 800 Hillside. Early voting in the hospital board election will be conducted in the Hemphill County Hospital Administration Lobby.
Election Day is Saturday, May 3, and polling places will be open from 7 am-7 pm. Hemphill County voters in all precincts will cast their ballots in both the school and hospital board elections at the Canadian High School Foyer, located at 621 S. 5th Street. Lipscomb County voters in Precincts 106 and 404 may cast ballots in the school board election at the Higgins Multipurpose Building, located at 15 E. 5th Street.
