Candidate filing begins next week in May 2 city, school, hospital, water district elections

The local political season kicks off next Wednesday, January 14, when candidates may officially begin filing for seats on the City Council and school and hospital boards. Aspirants for public office will have their choice of ten open seats which will be decided in May 2, 2026 elections. 

The deadline to file for a place on the General Election Ballot is Friday, February 13, 2026, at 5 pm.

I’m Bryan Bartlett and I’m running for Canadian ISD school board. I graduated from Canadian High School in 2004 and went on to attend West Texas A&M until I moved back home to go to work. I married my wife, Lea, in 2012, and we have two children: Remi, who is in sixth grade, and Case, who is in fourth grade. I’m the vice president of Bartlett’s Lumber and Hardware.

Full slate of candidates awaits voters in May 3 hospital, school board elections

Early voting begins Tuesday, April 22, in the May 3 Hemphill County Hospital District and Canadian Independent School District board elections. Thirteen candidates are vying for nine open seats, setting up contested races for both school and hospital boards.

The candidates for three open seats on the Hemphill County Hospital District Board of Directors are incumbents Whitney Jones, Colby Leach and Cory Pittman, as well as former board member Jesse Hanes and newcomer Travis Macias.

Candidate filing is underway for candidates seeking a place on the ballot in the May 3 city council, hospital, and school board elections. To date, The Record has received notification from three candidates: Ashton Macias and Bryan Bartlett have each filed for re-election to the Canadian ISD Board of Trustees, while Travis Macias has filed as a candidate for the Hemphill County Hospital District Board of Directors.

From Canadian ISD: Understanding the $20 Million Bond Issue

The Canadian ISD Board of Trustees has called for a $20 million Bond Issue Election to be held on Tuesday, May 4, 2024. Early voting will run from April 22 to April 30 at the CISD Business Office.

The objective of the proposed bond propositions is to fund existing expenses in such a way that less local tax revenue is sent to the State in the form of recapture, and more of the local revenue is used to serve Canadian ISD students. The 2024 Bond Proposal comprises two key propositions:
