Lady Cat Varsity cross-country team wins Canadian meet

The Lady Cat Varsity cross-country team won Canadian’s Annual Cross Country Meet here last Saturday for the third straight year. Konnar McClendon set a new course record with a blistering time of 10:59.

Finishing in second place, reported Coach Aaron Marks, was traditional powerhouse Gruver Lady Greyhounds.

Canadian’s Variety Girls team is made up of Konnar McClendon, Arizona Black, Elizabeth Guerrero, Brooklyn Beedy, Payton Lee, Kimora Morales, and Kate Escarcega.

Canadian’s Lady Wildcat Cross-Country team kicked off the season on Saturday with the annual Canyon Chicken Run. 

Eight girls ran on two different teams, reported Coach Aaron Marks. Team 1—whose members were Konnar McClendon, Elizabeth Guerrero, Payton Lee and Arionna Black—won second overall in its division. 

Team 2 was made up of Kate Escarcega, Esmeriah Shields, Jackie Lerma and Kimora Morales.

Shattuck FFA attends 580 Cattle Conference

WOODWARD, OKLAHOMA -- Shattuck FFA officers attended the first annual 580 Cattle Conference on Monday, August 12, at the Woodward County Event Center. 

This one-day event hosted numerous guest speakers and aimed to provide educational opportunities to those involved in the cattle industry.  Breakout sessions included talks from Congressman Frank Lucas, Oklahoma Secretary of Agriculture Blayne Arthur, Dr. David Lalman of Oklahoma State University,  Ellis County veterinarian Richard Prather, and more.

Texas Sales Tax Holiday is August 9-11, Marks 25th Year

(AUSTIN) — Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar is reminding shoppers they can save money on clothes and school supplies during the state’s sales tax holiday on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 9-11. This will be the 25th year of Texas’ oldest sales tax holiday.

Canadian ISD announces lone finalist for Superintendent

The Canadian Independent School District Board of Trustees is pleased to announce that Dr. Julia McMains is the lone finalist for the position of Canadian ISD Superintendent. After a competitive search that included 19 highly qualified applicants, the Board selected Dr. McMains due to her extensive experience in curriculum, dedication to staff and students, and unwavering commitment to academic excellence.

WTA&MU releases names of graduates, President’s and Dean’s Lists honorees

CANYON — The final tally is 1,129 graduates for West Texas A&M University’s Class of May 2024. West Texas A&M University this week officially released its list of 2024 graduates, as well as the names of students who earned President’s and Dean’s list honors. 

Overall, the University awarded 808 baccalaureate degrees and 321 master’s degrees to spring graduates at the May 13 commencement ceremonies, following procedural confirmation from the University’s seven deans.

Canadian ISD Superintendent Lynn Pulliam submits resignation

Dr. Lynn Pulliam notified Canadian ISD board and staff members Monday of his resignation as superintendent, effective July 31.

Pulliam—a Vega High School graduate with a Bachelor of Science degree from Texas Tech University and a Master of Education from West Texas A&M University—first joined the CISD staff in 2002, when he was hired to take the helm from veteran Canadian Elementary School Principal Karen Minyen, who retired after a 28-year reign on that campus.

Maddlynn Longoria is named 2024 CMS Abraham Cup winner

During Friday evening’s Canadian Middle School commencement ceremony at the high school gymnasium, Valedictorian Maddlynn Longoria was awarded the 2024 Abraham Cup by Superintendent Lynn Pulliam. The honor is based on leadership, citizenship, sportsmanship, and personality, as well as awards, honors and accomplishments during their 7th and 8th grade years.

“Canadian High School’s most honored award is the Liske Cup,” Superintendent Lynn Pulliam said, as he announced its recipient following the presentation of diplomas to 72 graduates of the Class of 2024 Saturday morning at Wildcat Stadium.
