Setting 'The Record' straight

Body
In the last two weeks of track-and-field reports, we failed to note that Arionna Black qualified in three regional track meet events—not two, as reported. Black competed last weekend in the 3200-meter run, 800-meter run, and mile-relay. At the area meet, she competed in all four of her events: pole vault, 3200-meter run, 800-meter run, and mile-relay. That was a particularly impressive achievement because three of those events—the 3200, pole vault and 800—are typically backto-back events at most meets. Black placed third in the 3200-meter run at the area meet, and then second at the regional qualifiers meet. We apologize for the error. — LEB

Opening Night at Larry Dunnam Field

Body
A total of 115 players suited up for opening night of the Canadian Community Center’s summer 2022 baseball season Monday, and—following their introduction to the crowd in the stands—stood lining the field for a tribute to the late Larry Dunnam, for whom the field was named.
Over a hundred baseball players and their coaches turn to salute the flag as it is raised by members of the Buffalo Wallow Chapter of the Young Marines.

‘Mr. Baseball’ Larry Dunnam

Body
In June 2003, Larry Dunnam was honored with a major league thank-you in a ceremony prior to the start of the All-Star games here. Dunnam had been the heart and soul of Canadian’s Little League organization for over 35 years, and surrounded by friends and family members—three of whom stuck around that evening to ump the bases—Dunnam accepted a plaque and gifts of appreciation for his service to the organization. Then he stepped to the mound for the ceremonial first pitch.

Senior Lady Cat golfer Briley Merket’s superb golf season came to an end last week during the Region I-3A golf tournament at the Shady Oaks Golf Course in Baird on Wednesday and Thursday. Playing as an individual, Merket shot rounds of 95-90, for a 36-hole score of 185. Merket tied for 14th overall, but fell short of qualifying for the UIL Class 3A state tournament. Merket may have ended her terrific high school athletic career, but she’ll continue playing basketball at Angelo State University. Wall was the regional team champion, carding a 333-323—656. Childress advanced to state as a team, finishing third (383-370—753). Wall’s Shay West (75-72—147) won the individual championship. CHS junior Ben Bryant placed in the top 10 in individual play on Monday and Tuesday of last week and will advance to the Class 2A boys state golf tournament to be played May 9-10 at Austin’s Jimmy Clay Golf Course. Their coach is Hayden Merket.
