How scared are you when it comes to catching COVID? Don’t worry. Your local Health department may be protecting you. A recent case in Kentucky involved a woman who decided to get tested for COVID before she visited her elderly mother in Michigan. The woman tested positive, but refused to sign papers stating she would quarantine for two weeks. What happened next demonstrates the power of the health department. Because she would not sign the quarantine agreement, she and her husband were fitted with an ankle monitor so law enforcement could keep track of her.

Hemphill Co. 4-H awards $15,000 in scholarships to 2020 CHS graduates

In the annual Hemphill County 4-H awards ceremony held at Jones Pavilion last Thursday, six members of the Canadian High School Class of 2020 were given $15,000 in scholarships. The scholarship recipients included Alex Smith, Carleigh Thompson, Kyler Mc-Clendon, Paige Perry, Cody Cooke, and Dissy Vargas.

Free COVID-19 testing to begin Friday for WTAMU campus

CANYON—Free COVID-19 testing for the West Texas A&M University campus community will begin Friday, July 24. Tests will be given by appointment between 9 am and 11 am in the Virgil Henson Activities Center. WT has set up a central location for the testing, which will consist of a simple, painless mouth swab monitored by trained personnel.

Four CISD students are FCCLA national qualifiers

Four members of Canadian ISD’s FCCLA program have qualified for the organization’s National Conference. 

Seniors Dissy Vargas and Kimberly Barragan earned a silver medal for their FCCLA Chapter Website project. 

Eighth-graders Presley Harper and Alicia Munoz earned a gold medal on their professional presentation, “Depression is Not Your Destiny.”

Habits once established become permanent. Some of the changes we are experiencing due to the 2020 pandemic may become so ingrained that we don’t go back to our pre-pandemic ways. I’ve switched to some new routines I plan to keep. The new ways have made life easier. I miss other habits with all my heart and can’t wait to go back to them. Here is an inventory of changes I like and changes I long to disappear.

Taylor S. Altmiller was among 3,700 students announced to the Wichita State University dean’s honor roll for spring 2020. To be included on the dean’s honor roll, a student must be enrolled full time (at least 12 credit hours) and earn at least a 3.5 grade-point average on a 4.0 scale. Located in Wichita, Kansas, WSU enrolls about 16,000 students and offers more than 50 undergraduate degree programs in more than 150 areas of study in six undergraduate colleges. Altmiller graduated from CHS in 2019.
