The Canadian Booster Club announced this week that plans are underway to hold the annual Hemphill County Junior Livestock Show and Sale, as usual. The two-day event is scheduled for January 15-16, 2021.

Orientation for the 2020-21 school year begins next week at Canadian Independent School District campuses. Registration took place last week at all four CISD campuses.

Catch a falling star this week, at least that’s what they look like. The annual Perseid meteor shower will be visible in Texas skies if you can find a dark place to watch. There will be two problems to your skywatch this year. A last quarter moon will light up the sky this week, making it harder to see the meteor shower. The other problem will be thousands of satellites.

Registration for the 2020-21 school year is underway at Canadian Independent School District campuses. In an effort to streamline the process, school officials scheduled registration times staggered by grade and/or last name.

Coy, Colt, and Cambree Pittman of Canadian participated in the Texas Junior Braunvieh Association’s Showcase and Braunvieh Bonanza in Wichita Falls, July 3-5. In the Intermediate News Article and Salesmanship contests, Coy won grand champion. He also raised the grand champion bred-and-owned purebred bull (MR Jack 990). Colt had the grand champion Junior Illustrated Talk, and the reserve grand champion Junior Sales Talk.

“Coughs and Sneezes Spread Diseases” was a successful World War II British propaganda slogan. The slogan encouraged all citizens to stay healthy. “Hitler Will Send No Warning,” was a slogan on a poster that reminded citizens to take their gas masks with them wherever they went. If we are at war with a virus, are slogans what we need to unite Americans behind a collective will to contain COVID?

Eight more minutes. Adding eight minutes to the school day is what my local school district plans to do. The first day of school has been postponed until Sept. 9. But that’s as far as our school board has gotten in their plans to reopen school. Football, however, got a thumbsup from UIL to start practice on time Aug. 3, so one key component is in place.
