Leo Avila, a senior member of the Canadian High School Band, will perform with the Texas All-State Band in San Antonio, on Saturday, Feb. 12, at the Henry B. González Convention Center as part of the 2022 Texas Music Educators Association Clinic/Convention.

Dockray named to Abilene Christian University’s Fall 2021 Dean’s Honor Roll Peyton Dockray, of Canadian, was named to the Abilene Christian University Fall 2021 Dean’s Honor Roll. Dockray is a sophomore majoring in Kinesiology.

Many a bucket list has been sidelined by the pandemic. Most of my friends had elaborate travel plans they had to abandon. Vicki and Larry wanted to achieve their goal of visiting every continent. Louise and Jim had to call off a trip to France. A group of four friends had planned an extended trip to India. A new list has become popular during the past two years that may give consolation to those who have had to postpone bucket-list activities. Instead of making a list of all the things you want to do before you kick the bucket, the latest craze is the chuck-it list—all the things you have absolutely no desire to do.

The Canadian Arts Alliance hosted their annual Christmas Concert at the CMS Auditorium on Sunday, Dec. 12. Music teachers Amy Carter, Dana Cook, and Betty Bynum, as well as an appreciative audience, listened to students perform holiday favorites. Special guest artist Alex Moreno played the “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy,” and a group of over 20 students played “Jingle Bells.” Robin King and Angie Hawkins served refreshments during intermission.

Subdued best describes Christmas decorations this year in my West Texas village. After the elaborate Halloween and Thanksgiving displays on my street, I was expecting even grander Christmas décor. So far, there are no displays in yards, just multicolored lights on eaves and gables, fences, gates, and trees. Two dueling trends this year are multicolored lights and solid blue. Maybe the blue is a fashion choice or it could be a subliminal expression of the collective mood. Has Christmas lost its excitement or are the people who went all out for Halloween and Thanksgiving displays simply played out? Here’s a rundown on this year’s anticlimactic Christmas decoration choices…

Marcee Cooke will be graduating from Texas A&M University on Saturday, Dec. 18, with her Bachelor of Science degree. Cooke, who was a member of Canadian High School Class of 2018, double-majored in animal science with an emphasis in meat science, as well as in agricultural communication and journalism.

Band Directors James and Daisy Edwards welcomed an appreciative audience to the high school gymnasium Sunday afternoon for the annual Canadian Wildcat Christmas Concert and Bake Sale. They expressed heartfelt thanks to school board, staff, bus drivers, booster club, parents, fans, and band members—a reminder that the successes of Canadian’s bands do not happen in a vacuum.

Canadian High School senior Pamela Escarcega learned last week that she had received a full four-year scholarship to the University of Notre Dame through the Quest-Bridge National College Match. QuestBridge is a national program that connects high-achieving high school seniors from low-income backgrounds with full fouryear scholarships to top colleges.
