In their July 19 meeting, the Canadian ISD board of trustees reviewed teacher salary schedules and compared them with the pay scale in other area school districts. The study revealed that this district’s salaries are no longer at the top of the pay scale, increasing the potential difficulty of filling staff vacancies in an increasingly competitive market.

WHEW! We had a wildfire over the weekend on the southeast side of the village. Our local volunteer fire department sprang into action and had the blaze under control within a few hours. Like most unincorporated towns in Texas, the men who live here drop everything when they get the “fire” message on their phones. Sometimes, it’s in the middle of the night. The recent fire was fought on a 107-degree afternoon. Thank goodness there was no wind.

CAA Children’s Theatre Camp stages ‘The Emperor’s New Clothes’

Body
If you ever judged another by their outward appearance, then you needed to be in the audience at the Texas Crown Performance Hall on Friday, July 1, for this Missoula Children’s Theatre production of The Emperor’s New Clothes. The Emperor, played by Mirabelle Brown, wanted to impress her subjects and friends and was told a fancy new wardrobe was the way to go. Trouble followed as the people of the kingdom felt their beloved Emperor no longer cared for them.

CCC's 4th of July Taco Pile-On at the Hemphill County Library

Body
The Canadian Community Center’s Taco Pile-On offered July 4th celebrants a simple choice. The menu promised ice-cold air-conditioning with a side ot taco pile-on. It was an offer few could resist in the 100-degree heat. The decision was made simpler still by the proximity of the dining room, in the Hemphill County Library basement, to most of the holiday events, including the parade, turtle race, and the courthouse lawn craft and food booths. All of that, plus some cheery smiles from members of the CCC youth baseball teams, who seized the opportunity to feed the masses and raise much-needed funds for the program. Shown in photos above are (top left)Breven and Cael Aldana and Morgan Bradford, serving up pinto beans to diners; (top right) Gavin English dispersing meals to go; and Alexdra Cippolone, pitching in to keep things running smoothly. All in all, it didn’t take much convincing, but the CCC’s Sawyer Landry and Victor Zafiro (below) gave it a pretty good shot, just the same. PHOTOS PROVIDED BY KIMBRA FAUS AND IKE JULIAN
