Obituaries

Neta Brooks Berry, age 88, of Liberty Hill, Texas, died peacefully at her home on October 29, 2024.  

Neta was born in Bowie (Montague County), Texas on March 19, 1936, to Carl and Lucille Brown Brooks. Neta attended schools in Bowie ISD until marrying Harold Don Berry on June 27, 1951.  H.D. was an oilfield worker for many years and they moved frequently throughout West Texas and the Big Country area for many years, until settling in Canadian, from 1961 through the mid-1970’s.  

Thomas Dwain Nix, known to his friends as “T.D. Nix,” age 88, passed away peacefully on October 28, 2024, at his home in Mineral Wells, Texas. He was born on August 4, 1936, and spent his childhood in Tolar.

Marvin Ray Longhofer peacefully passed away September 22, 2024, surrounded by his wife Sharon, and all of his children and grandchildren, in Longview, Texas.

Marvin and Sharon were long-time members at The Church of Uncertain at Caddo Lake. A memorial service was held there on September 28, 2024.

A graveside service will be held in Canadian, at the Edith Ford Memorial Cemetery on October 26, 2024, at 10:30 am with Gary Jahnel officiating. 

Alta Gladene Woodside-Swires, formally known to everyone as “GG” of Canadian stepped into the arms of Jesus on Monday, October 14, 2024, in Canadian.

Memorial services will be at 2 pm, Wednesday, October 16, at the Canadian Church of Christ with Barry Hobson, Pastor, officiating. Cremation and arrangements are under the direction of Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors.

Kathleen Jane Martindale, 87, of Amarillo, passed away on Tuesday, October 1, 2024. Memorial services will be held at 2 pm Wednesday, October 9, at First Baptist Church Sanctuary, 1208 S. Tyler St., with Pastor Mike Martindale and Dr. Howard Batson officiating.

Kathleen was born August 15, 1937 in Canadian, to Thomas and Josephine Riley. She graduated from Canadian High School, and went on to earn a bachelor degree in Education from West Texas State University. Kathleen married her husband, Jerry Martindale on August 20, 1960 in Canadian.

Memorial services will be at 11 am Saturday, October 5, 2024, at the Canadian River Walking Bridge.

Sally was born April 27, 1951, in Canadian, to William Gordon (Tex) and Lyndall Elizabeth Magill Hill.

Sally is preceded in death by her parents.

Mary Jane Wagner, 81 of Canadian stepped into her heavenly home Tuesday, September 24, 2024.

Funeral services were held at 2:30 pm on Sunday, September 29, in the Canadian Methodist Church with Gary Jahnel officiating. A private burial will be held Monday, September 30, in Edith Ford Memorial Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors of Canadian.

Polly Horton, 92, of Canadian, formerly of Higgins, stepped into the arms of Jesus on Sunday, September 22, 2024, in Amarillo.

Public viewing will be from 9 am-8 pm on Tuesday and Wednesday, September 24-25. The family will receive visitors on Wednesday, September 25, from 6-7:30 pm at Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors of Canadian.
