McAfee brings awareness to COVID scams

Laurie McAfee is a licensed social worker who currently works for the Area Agency on Aging. She is also a master trainer for Matter of Balance (fall prevention classes) and a certified benefits counselor. She has received additional training from the Senior Medicare Patrol in Houston. Laurie educates groups in the top-26 counties of the Panhandle on preventing Medicare fraud and abuse, as well as on Medicare savings programs and preventative services.

Abby Isom is Lion’s Club Sweetheart

The Canadian Lions Club Sweetheart, Abby Isom, participated in the District 2-T1 Queen Contest held Jan. 22-23 at Lake Tanglewood. The “Sweethearts” are selected by each local club from the senior class to serve a one-year term. Sweethearts attend the weekly meetings and serve, along with Lions members, in the various fundraising and service projects supported by the clubs.

Newman Memorial offers February cardiac specials

February is Healthy Heart Month, and Shattuck, Oklahoma’s Newman Memorial is offering three clinical specials this month as affordable ways for residents of this area to get proactive about their heart health. According to the American Heart Association, approximately 805,000 Americans have heart attacks each year. In addition, about 647,000 people die of heart disease in the United States each year—that’s one in every four deaths. Three key risk factors include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and smoking. About half of Americans have at least one of these risk factors (47 percent).
