In these photos, taken last Thursday by City Manager Joe Jarosek, Flores Concrete personnel prepare steel rebar for an upcoming concrete pour at Purcell Street (above), workers are compacting “fill soils” around the newly-installed manhole behind the Cattle Exchange in preparation for concrete surfacing (right), and surface replacement is underway in the alley behind Happy State Bank (below). The general contractor on the project is Amarillo Utility Contractors. The concrete repair is part of the TxDOT Utility Replacement Project.

The Commissioner of Texas General Land Office manages 13 million acres of state lands, including oil and gas properties, which supply funds to the Permanent School Fund (PSF). The commissioner also chairs the Veterans Land Board, which administers programs for Texas veterans, administers disaster recovery funds and is responsible for environmental protection of Texas’ coast.

Falling for Fall Foliage

Visitors and locals alike enjoyed the picture- perfect fall weather this weekend. People strolled Main Street in the crisp morning air, admired shiny rides at the car show, shopped at the amazing craft show, and even took to the air to view it all from 200 feet. Business owners and spectators enjoyed the energy and liveliness of Canadian, enjoying the extra boost in activity that the festival brought.

Living life in color

The Canadian High School art class received a special guest, George Mendoza, on Thursday, Sept. 29, whose exhibit, Colors of the Wind, is currently on display at the Citadelle Museum until November. After a tour of his exhibit, Mendoza spent time speaking with art students in Karol Ann Michelson’s advanced art class about his disability, his art, and how he used obstacles in his life as motivation.

Early voting begins Monday, Oct. 24, in general election

Early voting by personal appearance in the Nov. 8 mid-term elections begins in only 11 days, and while there is no presidential election on the ballot, nor are there locallycontested races to be settled, Hemphill County voters have plenty of decisions to make before Election Day next month.
