A Grand Jury convened at the Hemphill County Courthouse on Thursday, August 21, and returned with four felony indictments.

• Jackie Eugene Byrum, 37, was indicted on two third-degree felony charges of injury to a child with intent to cause bodily injury. The charges were based on a July 3, 2025 incident in which Byrum intentionally and knowingly caused bodily injury to a child 14 years of age or younger by hitting him in the chin and in the head. Byrum’s bond was set at $40,000. 

A newly-empaneled Hemphill County Grand Jury met on Thursday, January 23, and returned with seven indictments. 

• Tyvan Brett Hegwood, 38, was indicted on a state jail felony charge for possession of a controlled substance, Penalty Grade 2. On February 18, 2024, Hegwood was arrested and charged with intentionally and knowingly possessing less than one gram of Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol in Hemphill County. His bond was set at $12,500.

A Hemphill County Grand Jury returned three felony indictments last Thursday following a hearing in 31st Judicial District Court.

Francisco Peralta, 42, was indicted on a February 9, 2024, charge of driving while intoxicated—a third-degree felony offense. Peralta had prior convictions in Castro County on a 1999 DWI charge, and in 2013 for an offense related to the operation of a motor vehicle. His bond was set at $15,000.

A Hemphill County grand jury convened here on Thursday, February 22, and returned with four indictments.
