Handful of Texas races still at stake in May 26 primary runoff elections

Texas will hold 2026 Republican and Democratic Party primary runoff elections on Tuesday, May 26. The winners of those runoff races will head to the November 3, 2026, general election. 

Early voting in the both the Republican and Democratic Party primary runoffs begins next Monday, May 18, and ends on Friday, May 22. Hemphill County voters in all precincts wishing to cast early ballots may do so in Room 2002 at the Hemphill County Courthouse.

Voters in May 2 election will settle races for City Council, Water District and School boards

Body

Voters in this Saturday's local elections will determine the fate of candidates in three contested races. At stake are three seats on the Canadian City Council, three seats on the Hemphill County Underground Water District Board of Directors, and two seats on the Canadian ISD Board of Trustees.

Election Day polling places will be open from 7 am-7 pm this Saturday, May 2. Early voting in all three races ended on Tuesday, April 28.

Early voting begins Feb. 17

Early voting in the March 3 primary begins Monday, Feb. 17 and concludes on Friday, Feb. 27. A full slate of contested races will be on the ballots in both Republican and Democratic primaries. The deadline to request a mail ballot is Feb. 20, according to votetexas.gov.

Early voting in November 5 Presidential Election may set new record in Hemphill County

By midday on Wednesday, October 30, Hemphill County election officials reported that the number of early voters here had reached 1,000, and that local voters were continuing to arrive at the courthouse. A quick check of the voter registration rolls revealed that just over 42 percent of Hemphill County’s 2,349 registered voters had already cast ballots in the November 5, 2024 General Election—a pretty good sign that voter turnout in the 2024 Presidential race may just set a new record here.

Texans who wish to vote early in the Nov. 5 general election have until closing time Friday, Nov. 1 to do so. Secretary of State Jane Nelson is encouraging voters to double-check their precinct numbers and candidate selections before casting their ballots.

Early voting in the March 5 Democratic and Republican primaries will kick off next Tuesday at the Hemphill County Courthouse.

Local and district offices that will be on the 2024 primary and general election ballot include those of Hemphill County Tax Assessor/Collector, Hemphill County Attorney , Hemphill County Commissioner (Precincts 1 and 3), Hemphill County Sheriff, and 31st District Attorney.

Early voting now underway

Early voting is now underway for the Nov. 7 general election. Voters will decide the fate of 14 proposed amendments, including measures to provide property tax relief and raise the homestead exemption to $100,000.
