At exactly 10:41 pm on Friday night, May 27, someone driving what appears to be a black pickup truck, traveling south on 4th Street, pulled up to the corner of Main Street. The vehicle stops. The driver gets out and walks in front of the pickup toward the by-now-familiar “There’s a Killer Among Us” sign, which seeks information connected to the Thanksgiving 2016 disappearance and subsequent death of then-Canadian High School senior Thomas Brown.

About 60 people gathered at Canadian’s Edith Ford Cemetery Monday morning in observance of Memorial Day. They watched as the American Legion Post 56 honor guard of Warren Rivers, Matthew Huff, John McGarr, and Post Commander Tommy Wyatt, led by flag bearer Lacie Benjamin, marched single-file over a small knoll past the graves of Hemphill County’s soldiers and citizens.

Admission to the City Swimming Pool was free on Memorial Day, and the sun was convincingly warm. This crew of lifeguards, and new pool manager Parker Lee, were ready to get to work at 1 pm Monday afternoon as eager swimmers came through the gates. Canadian’s annual Memorial Day service will be held at 11 am on Monday, May 30, at Edith Ford Cemetery. As is traditional, the service will be conducted by American Legion Post 56. In the event of inclement weather, the service will be moved to the Jones Pavilion.

The music is back. Following a two-year hiatus due to the COVID pandemic, tickets are now on sale for the Canadian River Music Festival, scheduled for Saturday, June 11, at Jones Pavilion.

WASHINGTON—The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) announced today that U.S. Army Air Forces 1st Lt. Louis V. Girard, 20, of West, killed during World War II, was accounted for on March 28, 2022.
