HCH lab reports 21 new COVID positives in week

The Hemphill County Hospital District lab has reported 21 new positive tests for COVID-19 in local residents over the last seven days, from Jan. 21-27, and 13 new cases in non-county residents. There have been no new virus-related hospital admissions during that time either, and no inpatient or ER transfers to a facility with higher level of care have been necessary.

Driver’s license renewal extension in Texas expires in April

AUSTIN (KXAN)—If you’re putting off renewing your driver’s license because of the expiration date waiver, now is the time to make an appointment at the DMV. The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) reminds Texans that the waiver, which applies only to driver’s licenses that expired on or after March 13, 2020, will end on April 14.

Candidate filing began last Wednesday, Jan. 13, for candidates seeking a place on the ballot in the May 1 city council, and hospital and school board elections. There are eight open seats up for grabs this year, and incumbents have already begun announcing their intentions.

An unusual January rainfall brought badly-needed precipitation to Hemphill County and environs Sunday night, along with a flurry of snow and dense fog. Tammie Sasser Helton in Laketon and Dianne Buckingham in Twitty won the rain gauge shootout each with an inch.

In their first meeting of the New Year, held on Jan. 11, commissioners reviewed annual inspection reports and plans of action for the Upper Washita watershed dam sites in Hemphill County. Judge George Briant explained that, since the 1970s, there have been concerns about the integrity of one dam in particular, which controls water flow into Gageby Creek.
