Amarillo’s National Weather Service warned yesterday that wind chill values at the end of this week could sink well into the negative teens, and warned Panhandle-area residents to cover up and not let any skin be exposed to the elements for very long.

City recycling program earns praise from PRPC

City Manager Joe Jarosek shared a report from the Panhandle Regional Planning Commission this week, indicating that the city of Canadian had recycled 53,660 pounds of waste, and diverted 26.83 tons from the landfill. PRPC reported that the load of corrugated cardboard boxes picked up in Canadian on Sept. 14 had netted a check to the city of $4,950.13. “Your program is commendable, and I congratulate you and your recycling center staff for those efforts,” wrote Lori Gunn, PRPC regional services program coordinator.

Planting trees at Wildcat Stadium

Thirty-nine trees—half of them Chinese pistache and half cottonwood—were planted around the rim of Wildcat Stadium last week, and will someday provide shade for generations of Canadian High School students, their families, and Wildcat fans.

Sales and participation numbers for 2022 Junior Livestock Show and Sale are up from last year

Hemphill County 4-H and FFA students exhibited 101 animals in last weekend’s Junior Livestock Show and Sale. Sales of $70,650 were recorded for 2022, with addons and Booster Club contributions still being tallied.
