A car will be completely disassembled, music will be made, butter will be churned, locks will be picked, and much more during Science Museum Oklahoma’s Tinkerfest from 9 am to 4 pm on Saturday, Sept. 24.

Admission to the museum and all Tinkerfest activities are free to the public, thanks to presenting sponsor Oklahoma NSF EPSCoR. In addition to Oklahoma NSF EPSCoR, Tinkerfest is sponsored by Express Employment International.

WT Spirit Squad members announced for 2022-23

CANYON—A team of spirited students is ready to get loud for a new school year at West Texas A&M University. Among them is one familiar to Canadian football fans: Spirit Squad member Monica Salas, a sophomore education major from Canadian, and a member of the CHS Class of 2021.

AUSTIN—Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar reminds families that enrollment in the Texas Tuition Promise Fund, the state’s prepaid college tuition plan, began Sept. 1 and runs through Feb. 28, 2023. The Texas Tuition Promise Fund offers parents and loved ones the chance to prepay a child’s future higher education at Texas public colleges and universities at today’s prices, excluding medical and dental institutions. The $25 application fee to enroll in the plan will be waived for September and October enrollments (must be postmarked by Oct. 31).

Canadian ISD and Hemphill County will host a presentation, “Kids, Teens, and Technology,” by national internet safety expert Katie Greer, next Monday evening, Sept. 12, in the CMS Auditorium (Texas Crown). The presentation will begin at 6:30 pm.

Two Canadian High School students have earned academic honors from the College Board National Recognition Programs. CHS seniors Ben Bryant and Clara Pulliam have been awarded the National Rural/ Small-Town Award.

By Brian Lopez, The Texas Tribune Over the last two years, Texas’ public education system has been through the wringer, from shifting to online classes and debates about making masks mandatory to the ongoing tensions over how race and sex should be taught in schools to, most recently, the renewed discussion over school safety in the aftermath of the mass shooting in Uvalde where 19 elementary school students and two teachers were killed. Teachers have been at the front lines of all of these issues—and it’s taken a toll on them.

The First Day of School photo ritual was lifted to a whole new level Wednesday morning at Canadian Elementary School. Students arrived in waves at the doors of Canadian Elementary—some with parents in tow, others bravely entering the hallowed hallways alone, as their anxious parents watched from a distance, both reluctant and eager to part with their young charges. Only a few tears were shed, and most of them, by the moms and dads. This photo backdrop was a popular spot, well-used by families eager to capture one last image of their shiny and smiling young scholars on the verge of a new school year.
