Building the beautiful county duck ponds (above) and recreation complex were among the many community projects that Hemphill County invested in while Lynard Schafer was a member of the commissioners court.
In its quiet beauty early Tuesday morning, following an overnight snowfall, this seemed an appropriate place to seek solace after learning that Lynard had died the day before. His sudden absence left a hole in our hearts, but also a far more a lasting sense of appreciation for his dedication to this county, which is forever enriched by his thoughtful leadership.
IT HAS BEEN ALMOST an entire week since we turned off the marquee and locked our doors, unsure of when we’d once again be open for business.
It feels so much longer than that. Some of it is because we’ve spent a large portion of that week playing games with Atticus, with ever-changing rules and mysterious victories on his part and baffling anger when he doesn’t clench those victories.
