My reasons for voting in some Republican Primary races

Body

I AM A RETIRED TRIAL ATTORNEY whose undergraduate work was in government and history. I have researched candidates in some contested Republican races by looking primarily at the websites of candidates and Wikipedia. As in the past, I am sharing my reasons for supporting selected candidates should the reader care to consider them.

Primary Election 2024

A thank you note

Body

LAST WEEK, I RECEIVED a call from Hemphill County Deputy Oscar Ortega that my elderly cousin and her husband were lost and needed help. I was confused because they live in Temple, Texas—some 400 miles south of Canadian.

Apparently, three days earlier they set out to pay bills in Temple and simply got lost. Not only were they 400 miles from home, they were out of money and needed help.

Abbott: Battle continues over vouchers

As time runs out next week on the fourth special session, Gov. Greg Abbott said he will continue to fight for school choice, despite the Texas House once again decisively rejecting it when 21 Republicans largely from rural districts joined Democrats in stripping it from a $7.6 billion education bill. The Austin American-Statesman reported it is unclear what Abbott’s next move will be.

WE'VE JUST BEEN SAVORING the latest edition of Canadian High School’s student newspaper, The Cat's Tale, which features an informative front-page report on the repair work that is underway at Canadian High School's auxiliary gymnasium.

Other news includes a report, "Working Wildcats," on CHS students who are engaged in work practicums and after-school jobs, and a story about Friday the 13th, in which students and staff reveal their own superstitions or the lack thereof.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Texas 2023 Constitutional Amendments

Body

FOURTEEN PROPOSITIONS are on the November 7 ballot to amend the Texas Constitution.  I have read the Voter Guide of the League of Women Voters of Texas (https://www.lwvtexas.org/) setting forth arguments for and against each amendment.  I will vote all but Proposition 4 that would allow the legislature to increase the homestead exemption from $40,000 to $100,000 for school district taxation.  In future years, this could significantly decrease the revenue of most small school districts.

Seize the moment: At 50-year mark, celebrate and strengthen the Public Information Act

Body

WITH TRUST IN GOVERNMENT WANING, a Texas law can help keep a closer watch on public officials. Even citizens who continue to have faith in government can use this law to stay better informed.

How is taxpayer money spent? What’s happening behind the scenes as government decisions are made?

The Texas Public Information Act produces answers to these crucial questions. The act has been here for us for 50 years and is essential in protecting our right to know.
