City of Canadian crews were working at the corner of Main and 6th streets Wednesday morning on a damaged valve that is slowly leaking, forming pools of water at crossing intersections on the north side of Main Street. Director of Public Works Tommy Wyatt said they have not shut down any water lines, yet, and are trying to avoid any issues that might cause a backflow of water into the lines.

According to this week’s 14-day COV- ID-19 testing summary from the Hemphill County Hospital District, the hospital lab has tested fewer people both in-county and outof-county than the week before, resulting in fewer positive results (10 less) and fewer active cases in-county and out (5/each).

Four candidates have filed for the unexpired term of Canadian ISD board of trustees, left open by Landon Landry’s resignation earlier this month. As of 1:30 Wednesday afternoon, the open seat had drawn candidate filings by former school trustee Allen Hadaway, owner of Hadaway Engineering; retired Air Force Lt. Col. and cattle rancher David Parnell; Canadian InterBank president and Canadian/Hemphill County EDC director Heath Mitchell; and former city councilman and TR Cattle Company co-owner Brad Warren.
The position of Hemphill County Republican Party chair has attracted two candidates: retiring Justice of the Peace Larry Dunnam, and Kyle Barnett, the orchard manager for Sweet Ruthie’s Orchard. In order to fill the unexpired term formerly held by Mike Rollins, a temporary chair will be appointed by the state Republican Party committee. Either or both may file with the state Republican Party as candidates for the position in the 2022 Republican Party primary, which will be held next spring. The deadline for candidate filing in the primaries is Monday, Dec. 13.
