CHS Band sends 23 to State Solo & Ensemble Contest

Canadian High School band students competed in the UIL Solo and Ensemble contest at West Texas A&M University two weeks ago. Five soloists and three ensembles earned first-division ratings for their performances, and advanced to the state-level competition, which will be held in Austin on Memorial Day weekend.

CMS robotics team earns Judges Award

The CMS Galactic Builders earned the Judges Award at the FIRST Tech Challenge Panhandle North League Tournament held on Feb. 1, 2020, at Frank Philips College. This team competed against 31 district teams, of which only three were middle school teams. This year’s Judges Award was presented to the Galactic Builders based on their presentation and interview with the judges where they demonstrated growth as a rookie team in a league dominated by high school ones. Team members included (standing, left to right) Xander McQuiddy-Gasparlin, Karson Thompson, Morgan Orrell, Kenzie Flowers, Ethan Gerhardt; and (kneeling) Andrea Cedillo and Miranda Nunez. State officers from eight Career and Technical Student Organizations (CTSO) gathered in Austin on Jan. 29-31. Among them was FC- CLA State Parliamentarian Lily Smith, who is also president of the local FCCLA chapter at CISD.

THE IOWA DEMOCRATIC CAUCUS was messy, but revealing. Young voters voted for the oldest candidate, Bernie Sanders (78), and older voters preferred the youngest candidate, Pete Buttigieg (38). Given that Iowa is not a typical U.S. state, as far as demographics go, maybe the pattern will not be repeated in other state primaries. Still, the Iowa caucus results are interesting considering the projected demographic patterns for the 2020-2030 decade.
