OBITUARY: BEVERLY SUE ‘SUSIE’ BAXTER
APRIL 2, 1955 — MARCH 31, 2026
Beverly Sue “Susie” Baxter, 70, of Canadian stepped into her heavenly home on March 31, 2026, the love of her life was by her side.
Funeral Services will be held at 10 am on Saturday, April 4, at the Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors of Canadian Chapel with Gary Jahnel, officiating. Burial will follow at Edith Ford Memorial Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors of Canadian.
Public viewing will be conducted on Thursday, April 2, from 12-8 pm, and on Friday, April 3, from 9 am-8 pm at Carmichal-Whatley Funeral Directors of Canadian.
Susie was born April 2, 1955, in Pampa. In high school she participated in a Vocal Trio, winning the State competition. Susie also played Mary Poppins in a theater production. She moved to Canadian from Kermit in 1974 and met the love of her life, Shaffer Baxter. They married June 25, 1976. Susie attended Frank Phillips College receiving her Vocational Nursing License. Susie took care of the newborn babies in the old and new hospitals. She also attended H&R Block training. Susie owned the Donut Shop running it with her grandparents, Roger and Addie Batts, prior to her marriage to Shaffer.
Susie and Shaffer were a good team from the very beginning; they did everything together. They operated the Baxter Tire Shop and later the Sweet Temptations and Grill. They enjoyed serving the community with smiles and excellent service. Susie was the first woman volunteer with the Canadian Volunteer Fire Department. Susie eventually went to work for Canadian ISD in the transportation department driving buses and also serving as secretary. She retired after 19 years. She enjoyed sewing, reading, loving children and taking care of her many family members.
Susie was preceded in death by her parents, Ralph and Velma Hornberger; a brother, Dawayne Meeckum; brothers-in-law: David Bennett, Jerry Martin, and Jim Martin.
Those left to cherish Susie’s memory are her husband, Shaffer Baxter; children: Heather Baxter and Shawn Baxter; sisters: Vicki Cain and husband David and Linda Bennett; nieces and nephews; Tina, Jeremy, Brandie, Brian, Shelby, Jason, Janie, Heather and Amber; and brother-in-law, Larry Martin and wife Norma.
