Additional disaster assistance approved

Seven Texas counties have been approved by the Federal Emergency Management Agency for grants for emergency work and replacement of disaster-damaged public infrastructure, after severe weather and flooding struck much of Deep East Texas, Gov. Gregg Abbott’s office reported. Counties eligible for FEMA’s Public Assistance program include Harris, Liberty, Montgomery, Polk, San Jacinto, Trinity and Walker.

Memorial Day ceremony to be observed on Monday, May 27, at Edith Ford Cemetery

Canadian’s annual communitywide Memorial Day ceremony will be held on Monday, May 27, at 11 am. This is one of Canadian’s most important events, honoring generations of men and women of Hemphill County who served in the defense of their country.

As in years past, Canadian’s American Legion Post 56 will conduct this year’s ceremony, which will be held at Edith Ford Memorial Cemetery.

Canadian ISD Superintendent Lynn Pulliam submits resignation

Dr. Lynn Pulliam notified Canadian ISD board and staff members Monday of his resignation as superintendent, effective July 31.

Pulliam—a Vega High School graduate with a Bachelor of Science degree from Texas Tech University and a Master of Education from West Texas A&M University—first joined the CISD staff in 2002, when he was hired to take the helm from veteran Canadian Elementary School Principal Karen Minyen, who retired after a 28-year reign on that campus.

Hemphill County Grand Jury indicts three

Body

A Hemphill County Grand Jury returned three felony indictments last Thursday following a hearing in 31st Judicial District Court.

Francisco Peralta, 42, was indicted on a February 9, 2024, charge of driving while intoxicated—a third-degree felony offense. Peralta had prior convictions in Castro County on a 1999 DWI charge, and in 2013 for an offense related to the operation of a motor vehicle. His bond was set at $15,000.

Maddlynn Longoria is named 2024 CMS Abraham Cup winner

During Friday evening’s Canadian Middle School commencement ceremony at the high school gymnasium, Valedictorian Maddlynn Longoria was awarded the 2024 Abraham Cup by Superintendent Lynn Pulliam. The honor is based on leadership, citizenship, sportsmanship, and personality, as well as awards, honors and accomplishments during their 7th and 8th grade years.

“Canadian High School’s most honored award is the Liske Cup,” Superintendent Lynn Pulliam said, as he announced its recipient following the presentation of diplomas to 72 graduates of the Class of 2024 Saturday morning at Wildcat Stadium.
