High gas prices eating into Texans’ budgets

The average price for a gallon of gasoline in Texas has risen from $2.55 in early February to $3.91 as of Sunday, according to AAA. Diesel prices hover around $5 a gallon. The average Texan now spends $233 a month on gasoline, according to a study reported in The Texas Tribune.

National Newspaper Association recognizes World Press Freedom Day

A free press protects the rights of all Americans, National Newspaper Association Chair Martha Diaz Aszkenazy, publisher of the San Fernando (California) Valley Sun and El Sol, said today. Next Sunday, May 3, is recognized by UNESCO as World Press Freedom Day.

UNESCO’s World Trends report says press freedom has experienced its steepest decline since 2012.

Canadian High School students medal in 3A Region 1 Academic UIL

CHS students Rene Osornio (senior) and Jasmine Avila (junior) qualified for the 3A UIL State Academic Meet in Austin after placing in the top three at their respective events at the region meet Saturday. 

Avila took gold in Editorial Writing, and Osornio earned 2nd place in Feature Writing.

Texas awards first $400 million in school vouchers
State officials began sending out the first notices to families awarded education vouchers last week, the Houston Chronicle reported. In the first round, 42,644 qualified, mostly students with special needs who are considered the highest priority.

Texas Veterans Commission Representative to Visit Canadian

Ryan Sawyer, Claims Benefit Advisor for the Texas Veterans Commission (TVC), will be in Canadian on Monday, April 27. Claims Advisors serve veterans, their dependents and survivors, in all matters pertaining to veterans' disability benefits and rights. The TVC is the designated agency of the state of Texas to represent the State and its veterans before the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).
