Main St. collision

On Friday, Oct. 16, a 2015 Buick Encore traveling south on Third Street, entered the intersection at Main. The driver failed to yield the right-of-way to an eastbound Ford pickup, driven by a city of Canadian employee. The Buick broadsided the pickup. The collision caused minimal damage to the pickup, and extensive damage to the front of the Buick. No injuries were reported as a result of the accident. Jackalope Fire in Roberts Co. burns 11,520 acres

Firefighters from several area fire departments were dispatched Sunday afternoon to provide mutual aid to a wildfire in Roberts County, which, at last report burned 11,520 acres of land, threatened 10 structures and two ranch compounds, and temporarily closed FM 283.

August to August, rural jobs are down by 4.3 percent

EDITOR’S NOTE: The loss of oilfield jobs and related businesses—combined with the impact of COVID-19 shutdowns—began to take a dramatic toll on Hemphill County in August. Canadian saw its job count drop from 1,884 in August 2019, to 1,721 in August 2020—a decline of 8.7 percent, or 163 jobs. The national average is a loss of 6.4 percent of all jobs.

Tralee Crisis Center offers legal help to family violence survivors

Tralee Crisis Center, a nonprofit victim services agency based in Pampa but serving Carson, Childress, Collingsworth, Donley, Gray, Hemphill, Roberts, and Wheeler counties, recently received a grant from the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) to provide funding for legal services for survivors of family violence.

The number of new COVID-19 infections remained steady last week in rural America, but troubling levels of new infections placed an additional 68 rural counties on the White House red-zone list—an indication indicating that authorities in those counties need to do more to control the spread of the virus.
