In a nearly four-hour meeting last Thursday evening, Canadian ISD trustees covered the full gamut of schoolrelated business, from budget preparation and speculation over the newest, but as-yet unveiled school funding template, to a laundry list of capital improvement projects; from the annual Health Advisory Report by School Nurse Molly Kerrigan, to an update on the Hemphill County Appraisal District’s growing legal expenses in ongoing pipeline litigation.

Emergency responders and law enforcement officers were called to two accidents in two days at the start of the week—the first a one-vehicle rollover Monday on CR 6, south of Canadian, and the second a two-vehicle collision on US 33 near CR 21 southeast of town.

Commissioners endorsed an interlocal agreement on Monday allowing the Hemphill County Sheriff’s Office to handle dispatch and 911 calls for the Roberts County Sheriff’s Office—a service HCSO dispatchers have already been handling on a part-time basis, but for which it will now assume the responsibility 24/7, if officials in the two counties can agree on reasonable compensation to cover the costs.

Not typically known for its graffiti-covered walls, Canadian was the beneficiary, last month, of an almost hidden painting in The Ruins of what was once the old high school at Kingman Ave. and 6th Street.

Canadian High School alumnus Benjamin Antillon Fernandez received his Juris Doctor from Harvard Law School during a May 27 commencement ceremony conducted via live Zoom webcast. He celebrated this milestone event with his wife, Gabriela Lastres, who graduated last month from the Harvard Kennedy School with a master’s degree in public policy.
