Candidate filing underway for May 7 city, hospital, school, water board elections

Candidate filing began on Wednesday, Jan. 19, for candidates seeking a place on the ballot in the May 7 city council, and hospital, school, and water district board elections. Aspirants to public office will have their choice of 13 open seats. The filing deadline is Friday, Feb. 18, at 5 pm. Details about filing and eligibility for each governmental entity are as follows:

Yesterday, the hospital district released their 14-day testing summary of tests performed in the last two weeks (610), the total number of positives results (273), and the testing positivity rate (45 percent overall, 41 percent for Hemphill County residents, and 49 percent for out-of-county residents).

WT’s American West wins NEH

CANYON—A new initiative that will shine a spotlight on the contributions of Mexican-Americans in the High Plains will be funded through a newly announced grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities. The Center for the Study of the American West at West Texas A&M University was granted $148,728 to fund its “Forgotten Frontera: The Mexican American Southern Plains” initiative, the NEH announced Jan. 11.
