Highway 60 traffic switch to begin this Thursday in Canadian
UPDATE: According to a statement issued today by TxDOT officials, the traffic switch on US 60 in Canadian has been postponed until after the July 4th holiday due to unforeseen circumstances. "We appreciate the public’s patience on the matter as we work to deliver a safe, quality product," said TxDOT Public Information Officer Jason Britsch. "Please drive with caution and reduce speed through all work zones. All projects are subject to change due to weather, emergency work and other unexpected events. CANADIAN – Beginning Thursday, June 27, traffic will switch from westbound US 60 to the eastbound side as crews continue to work on the US 60 Highway Improvement Project in Canadian. The project extends from Birch Street on the south edge of Canadian to the intersection with Main Street in the center of downtown.
Work on the 0.850-mile project began just over a year ago, on Tuesday, May 16, and was originally expected to span 305 working days. Minor delays in the timeline were caused by heavy rains and engineering corrections, resulting in a revised expected completion date of December 2024.
The 0.850-mile project will cost $13,405,600. The project’s scope includes rehabilitation of the existing roadway, installation of new concrete storm sewers and box culverts, pedestrian sidewalks, curbing and driveways, new signal lights and improved illumination.
In addition, pavement markings on existing pavement north of town, just past the Sixth Street intersection, have been updated.
The city of Canadian has funded the replacement of old streetlights with new decorative lights and banner brackets throughout the project area. That lighting is a nod to the city’s comprehensive plan—adopted in 2016—and addresses the goal of creating an attractive corridor and entryway to the city along US 60, welcoming visitors to stop and stay here. The cost—$340,000—has already been paid.
This project was preceded by extensive work relocating city water and sewer lines that run beneath US 60, which was completed in January 2023.
TxDOT asks that motorists drive with caution and reduce speed through all work zones. All projects are subject to change due to weather, emergency work and other unexpected events.
