Early voting ends Friday at 5 pm in the March 1 Republican and Democratic primaries.

On Tuesday, March 1, Texas voters will head to their local polling places to choose their party nominees for statewide seats, including governor, lieutenant governor, and district-based congressional and legislative seats.

Several top-of-the-ballot primary contests appear to be bound for primary run-off elections, due to the sheer number of candidates in the mix. After the primary dust clears, those offices will then be resolved in the General Election on Nov. 8.

There are only two locally-contested races here in Hemphill County: Jim Black is challenging Precinct 4 County Commissioner Nicholas Thomas’ re-election bid, and Jay Mosely is opposing appointed Justice of the Peace Kathy Dumbauld for that seat.

Several other local and district offices have already been settled, with nary a ballot having been cast. District Judge Steven R. Emmert is unopposed in the Republican primary for re-election to that office, and faces no Democratic challenger next fall. Lisa Johnson’s bid for the Republican nomination to replace retiring Hemphill County Judge George Briant is also unchallenged, and the road to her swearing-in next January is clear.

Also uncontested in Hemphill County are the offices of District and County Clerk, where Johnson’s deputy clerk, Sylvia Guerrero, is the sole contender; County Treasurer Kay Smallwood, whose re-election quest is unchallenged; and Precinct 2 County Commissioner Tim Alexander, whose re-election is also uncontested.

All polling places (find your precinct location at right) will be open from 7 am to 7 pm. The rest is up to those who show up to vote.
