Fernando Escalante, 60, of Garden City, Kansas, died Saturday, Nov. 15, in a collision with a deer on US 83 north of Canadian. Two passengers in the 2014 Jeep Wrangler— his wife, Maria Escalante, 65, and Aburto Quintil Dominguez, 59—both sustained serious injuries and were transported to Hemphill County Hospital.

A preliminary investigation by the Texas Highway Patrol determined that the Jeep was northbound on US 83 when it struck a deer standing in the northbound lane. After impact, the driver swerved hard to the left and entered a side skid, crossed the roadway and rolled over a guardrail, striking several small trees to the west.

The victim was not wearing a seat belt, and was ejected from the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene. His passengers were both seat belted.

The crash remains under investigation.
