Canadian High School commencement ceremonies were conducted on Saturday, May 24, at Chris Koetting Field in Wildcat Stadium. Seventy-six members of the CHS Class of 2025 received their diplomas from trustees Rudy Godino, Jessica Cowden, Cody Culwell, Heath Mitchell, Bryan Bartlett, Tatum Pennington and Kent Sisco.
Following the senior class processional, Wyatt Davis delivered an invocation, followed by Jessa Bell’s welcome to those assembled. Addresses were given by Class Salutatorian Cooper Powell, Valedictorian Julian Dominguez, and top-ranking graduate Elyse Beck, followed by Principal James Bryant’s presentation of the Top 10, and a presentation of the class by Darlene Walker.
Following the presentation of diplomas, Superintendent Julia McMains presented the coveted Canadian High School’s most prestigious honor: the Liske Cup, named after Albert Paul Liske.
In 1904, Mr. Liske settled in Canadian after arriving in the Texas Panhandle. A visionary and leader, he played a vital role in the growth and development of Canadian and the surrounding area by promoting local business. He founded the Liske Grain Company and became a prominent figure in the grain industry throughout the Eastern Panhandle.
In 1930, the Liske Grain Company donated a beautiful trophy to be awarded to the best all-around student at Canadian High School. Since then, 95 graduates have received this distinguished honor. The recipient of the Liske Cup is selected by a committee of high school teachers and administrators based on scholarship, leadership, citizenship, attitude, and sportsmanship. Participation in school activities and academic achievement are key factors in the selection process.
“The 95th recipient of the Liske Cup exemplifies all of these qualities,” Dr. McMains said. “Talented, engaged, and accomplished, today’s winner has achieved success in extracurricular activities at the district, regional, and state levels.”
“She has competed in multiple sports during her time at CHS and demonstrated leadership and dedication through her involvement in Spirit Club, National Honor Society, Student Council, and as a class officer,” Dr. McMains noted. “She was recognized by the College Board with a National Merit Commendation and advanced to the State UIL competition in both her junior and senior years. Beyond school, she is an active member of her church youth group and has contributed over 117 hours of community service, assisting with fire relief efforts, church initiatives, and the Snack Pack for Kids program.”
“This student is hardworking, intelligent, and compassionate possessing all the attributes of a true leader and deserving recipient,” McMains concluded, as she called Elyse Beck forward to accept the trophy.
