Canadian celebrates Independence Day 2023
The four-day festivities begin tomorrow
The July 4th celebration in Canadian this year will be a little strung out across the calendar because of the way the 4th occurs---on a Tuesday.
The events begins tomorrow, Thursday, June 29, with the Rodeo Slack in the morning and a Rodeo Performance that evening. The Citadelle Art Museum is hosting “Painted Pages: Illuminated Manuscripts 13th-18th Centuries,” along with tours of the mansion and the extensive art collection of Dr. Malouf and Therese Abraham. River Valley Museum has a special exhibit, the “Reid Errington Saddle Exhibit and Western Art Show,” with Western art by Ronda Bartlett, Gary Leddy, and Jay Michelsen.
On Friday, June 30, the two museums will be open during the day, and a rodeo performance will start out the evening. Bull Drop Bingo chances will be available for purchase outside of the rodeo arena, sponsored by the Canadian River Beach Club (CRBC). A rodeo dance will cap out the evening, featuring the Country Justice Band.
Saturday, July 1, will dawn with the same slate of events, except for a different band for the dance. That night the Wooden Nickel Band takes the stage.
Then we all have to wait for the magic day, Tuesday, July 4, to wrap up this red, white and blue extravaganza. While you are cooling your heels, you can satisfy your hunger with InterBank’s Customer Appreciation Cookout on Monday, July 3. Don’t miss out on the Hot Dogs and Coke Floats being served, starting at 11:30 am in the bank lobby.
When the 4th finally arrives, the beloved parade, this year dubbed Stars & Stripes Forever will commence at 10 am. On the Courthouse lawn, the Arts & Crafts Fair will be in place. The kid-favorite Turtle Race will begin right after the parade, followed by Chicken Poop Bingo (brought to you by the CRBC), and Water Polo (brought to you by the Canadian Volunteer Fire Department).
Food is then on order at the Taco Pile-on in the Hemphill County Library basement, sponsored by the Canadian Community Center. The RVPM and The Citadelle will be open for visitors in the afternoon and a free movie will be shown at The Palace Theatre. For the legions of rodeo fans, a Ranch Rodeo is also scheduled for the afternoon. To cool off later, the crowd can gather at the Hemphill County Duck Ponds for free watermelon. And, finally, all of the busy-ness of July 4th will be polished off with the annual Fireworks Display at the Hemphill County Recreation Complex, but we will all have to wait for dusk.
