Candidate filing begins next week in May 2 city, school, hospital, water district elections

The local political season kicks off next Wednesday, January 14, when candidates may officially begin filing for seats on the City Council and school and hospital boards. Aspirants for public office will have their choice of ten open seats which will be decided in May 2, 2026 elections. 

The deadline to file for a place on the General Election Ballot is Friday, February 13, 2026, at 5 pm.

Our Blood Institute, Coffee Memorial Blood Center issues urgent call for Type O Donors

January 6, 2026 ─ Our Blood Institute-Coffee Memorial Blood Center is in critical need of type O blood donors, with supplies of both O-positive and O-negative blood at low levels following the holidays. With patients living in the balance every day, O donors are needed now to support hospitals and emergency responders.
Two types of O donors with lifesaving impact:
· O-positive (O+) “Gold Donors”

Several local students from Canadian and nearby communities earned recognition i WTAMU’s Fall 2025 President’s List and Dean’s List, which were released in conjunction with Fall Commencement Ceremonies. They were:

President’s List (Undergraduates with a minimum of 12 credit hours/semester earning 4.0 GPA)

Five big moves from the Lege in 2025

The Texas Legislature made a host of major decisions in 2025, as The Dallas Morning News reported. Here are the highlights:

• Homeowners received a break on their property taxes after approving a proposed constitutional amendment in November. The homestead exemption was increased to $140,000 from $100,000. People 65 and older were given an additional $60,000 exemption on top of that.
