School board seeks public input on budget and tax rate Aug. 16
Notice of Public Hearing
On Tuesday, Aug. 16, the Canadian ISD board of trustees will conduct a public meeting to discuss the district’s 2022-23 budget, which will determine the tax rate that will be adopted. Members of the community are welcome to attend as well as to submit their comments, questions, and concerns.
A proposed 5 percent salary increase for Canadian ISD teachers will also be considered during Tuesday’s meeting. “At that time,” said Superintendent Lynn Pulliam, “the board will act on the employee compensation plan along with the budget and tax rate. At this point, we are moving forward with including the salary schedule increase as we prepare the budget.”
A public notice published in last week’s Canadian Record detailed the district’s proposed tax rate of $0.8846/$100 for maintenance and operations and $0.2800/$100 to pay bonded indebtedness, and proposed budget increases for maintenance and operations (10.70 percent) and debt service (4.50 percent) and total expenditures (9.46 percent).
Total appraised property values rose in Canadian ISD this year, from $984,282,060 to $1,319,365,698—an increase of about 34 percent.
The board is proposing a total tax rate of $1.1646 this year, 8.54 percent lower than last year’s rate of $1.2734. The highest rate the district can adopt without triggering a voter approval election is $1.2701.
The public meeting begins at 6:30 pm in the CISD Administration Building.
