Body

My name is Lisa Johnson and I am seeking re-election for the position of Hemphill County Judge.

I graduated from Canadian High School, and my husband Steve and I raised our four children here.  We now have seven wonderful grandchildren.

I was first elected as County Judge in the 2021 General Election. Prior to holding this position, I served as Hemphill County & District Clerk for 11 years. I was elected to the Executive Board of the County & District Clerks Association in 2018. In 2021, I became the President and was a member of the Board of Directors for the Texas Association of Counties the same year.

After being elected Hemphill County Judge, I was appointed in 2023 to the TAC Judicial Education Committee, which plans the continuing education for all County Judges in Texas. I was elected in 2024 as the Secretary of the Panhandle County Judges and Commissioners Association and currently serve as Vice President.

Earlier this year, I was accepted to the V.G. Young Institute of County Government’s Commissioners Court Leadership Academy. This program gives members of Commissioners Court the tools they need to be more effective leaders in their communities.

Locally, in 2023, I initiated the start of the Hemphill County Seniors group that meets for lunch on Thursdays at the Heritage Community Room at Mesa View Senior Living. This group of seniors enjoys meals together as well as educational and entertaining programs throughout the year.

In February and March of 2024, I worked with local and state agencies to manage emergency operations during the Smokehouse Creek Fire. This was my first disaster as Hemphill County’s Emergency Management Director. I learned so much from this event and was able to assist in the response and recovery from this devastating fire. I am so proud of how our community responded to the crisis and still supports those who suffered tremendous loss.

County Extension Agent Tanya Holloway and I put together a committee to form Leadership Canadian earlier this year. This program is designed to inspire and inform future leaders in Canadian and Hemphill County.

As County Judge, I preside over Commissioners Court and have jurisdiction over misdemeanor criminal cases, probate court, mental health cases and juvenile matters. I also have administrative duties such as Chief Budget Officer, oversee maintenance of county property, work with local and state agencies, and maintain policies.

It is my honor to serve as your Hemphill County Judge and to represent you in meaningful ways around the state of Texas. I ask for your vote in the Republican Primary Election on March 3, 2026.
