Early voting begins Tuesday, April 22, in the May 3 Hemphill County Hospital District and Canadian Independent School District board elections. Thirteen candidates are vying for nine open seats, setting up contested races for both school and hospital boards.

The candidates for three open seats on the Hemphill County Hospital District Board of Directors are incumbents Whitney Jones, Colby Leach and Cory Pittman, as well as former board member Jesse Hanes and newcomer Travis Macias.

Six candidates have signed up for three open seats on the Canadian Independent School District Board of Trustees. Ashton Macias and Bryan Bartlett both filed for re-election. Chase Smyth, Shannon Woodrum, Tatum Pennington and Kent Sisco each announced as candidates, as well. Long-time board member Andy Orrell chose not to seek re-election.

With no contested races for either the Mayor or City Council, the City of Canadian has cancelled its election. Terrill Bartlett signed up for another term as Mayor.
