For over six decades, Dick Wilberforce has photographed nature and wildlife, and has focused his lens on every living thing, from bobwhite quail and bighorn sheep to bobcats, grey foxes, and the elusive lesser prairie-chicken. He has published a series of books featuring his photographic art.

His latest self-published book, titled Welcome to the World of the Longhorn, is about to be released. On Tuesday, several review copies were delivered to the Last Cowboy’s Court, where they were eagerly received and reviewed by Wilberforce; his wife, Geri; and Remelle Farrar and Dawn Dial, both of whom assisted in preparing the book for publication.

Many of Wilberforce’s longhorn photos have been on public display here, including showings at the Last Cowboy’s Court and the River Valley Pioneer Museum, and in the Canadian Visitors Center gallery room. The book itself contains a treasure trove of ? images—all devoted to the Texas Longhorn, which has become a common symbol of Texas itself.

The Texas Longhorn is an American breed of cattle, characterized by its long horns, which have been known to span more than 8 feet from tip to tip. The cattle were brought to the Americas by Spanish conquistadores and arrived in Texas near the end of the 17th century. They have lived a near-feral existence on rangeland for hundreds of years, to the point of near extinction, until the stock’s longevity, resistance to disease, and ability to thrive on marginal pastures resulted in their revival.

“Our lives, our landscapes, and our natural wonders make for truly incredible photo inspiration,” Wilberforce once wrote. “I have been fortunate enough to capture such beauty through my lens, and share with friends, family, and followers alike.”
