Contested school, hospital board races will be decided Saturday
The consolidated polling place in the CHS foyer will open at 7 am on Saturday for voters casting ballots in races for seats on the Hemphill County Hospital and Canadian ISD boards.
Four candidates are vying for three open seats on the Hemphill County Hospital District board of directors. The race is between incumbents Colby Leach and Cory Pittman, and first-time candidates Jesse Hanes and Whitney Jones.
A contested race for two open seats on the Canadian ISD board of trustees will also be settled on Saturday. Voters will choose between incumbents Courtney Trolinger and Dr. Cody Culwell and a new challenger, Blake Beedy.
With no contested races for two open seats on the city council, and no challenge to Mayor Terrill Bartlett’s bid for a second term, the city elections were cancelled. Two newcomers, Jonilyn Hanes and Chase Smyth, will take their oaths of office alongside Bartlett in the next city council session, following the council’s March vote to certify the slate of declared candidates and cancel the election.
Early voting at the Hemphill County Hospital ended Tuesday afternoon with 98 in-person votes cast, and 10 more sent out by mail, with five of those returned by Wednesday. Voting was somewhat more brisk at Canadian ISD, where 161 total ballots were cast.
Polling in the Canadian High School foyer will begin at 7 am Saturday, and end at 7 pm. The election results will be announced on The Record Facebook page when the ballots are all counted.
