The Canadian City Council will conduct a public hearing next Monday, Aug. 15 on the proposed annexation of two tracts of land, totaling 10.84 acres, located at 600 N. 2nd St. on the north edge of Canadian.

The annexation petition, filed by Toot ‘n Totum Director of Real Estate Bruce Armistead, was submitted to the city on Monday, June 13. It followed news that a special election would be held on Tuesday, Nov. 8, to legalize the sale of all alcoholic beverages—including mixed beverages—within the city limits. A localoption liquor petition, containing 305 signatures, was successfully filed by Shila Wyatt in April, triggering the wet-dry election.

The property proposed for annexation was purchased by the Amarillo-based Toot ‘n Totum chain during the summer of 2016, in anticipation of what was then a countywide local-option vote. That wet-dry vote failed, and Toot ‘n Totum CEO Greg Mitchell withdrew his plans to build a convenience store and truck stop here, saying he was not ready to pursue the project until he saw some sign of economic recovery in Canadian.

The petition requests annexation of the entire area; although, a portion of the property is already within the city boundaries. The complete metes and bounds description and survey of the proposed area are available for viewing in the city secretary’s office.

Monday’s hearing will be held for the purpose of receiving public comment on the proposed annexation. The hearing begins at 5:30 pm in city council chambers on the second floor of City Hall.

Following the hearing, the council will discuss the annexation request and vote to approve or deny it.
