Chaynee Slavin heads to Nationals

Canadian High School freshman Chaynee Slavin has qualified for the 2022 National Junior High Finals Rodeo, which will be held June 19-25, at the Georgia National Fairgrounds in Perry, Georgia. Slavin advanced to the national competition after finishing the year third overall in breakaway roping and poles in the Oklahoma Junior High School Rodeo Association finals.

Lake Fryer Fishing Tourney hooks a good crop of young anglers

The Children’s Fishing Tournament, hosted by the Wolf Creek Improvement Board, brought 190 kids to Lake Fryer on Saturday, June 4. Award winners in the competition were: Ages 3-6 (top photo): 1st, Alice Dewitt; 2nd, Zoey Yara; 3rd, Camden Robinson Ages 7-10 (middle photo): 1st, Kendall Dewitt; 2nd, Isaac Flores; 3rd, Bristol Creswell Ages 11-14 (bottom photo): 1st, Brooklyn Kile; 2nd, Sydney Harper; 3rd, Alexander Gonzales Several other prizes were presented at the culmination of the tournament.

Jordan Lovins qualifies for College National Finals

Jordan Lovins recently qualified as a team roper for his first trip to the College National Finals Rodeo, which will be held at the Ford Wyoming Center in Casper, Wyoming, June 12-18. Lovins just completed his freshman year at WOSC in Altus, Oklahoma, where he earned a rodeo scholarship, and is majoring in physical education. He will partner at Nationals with Ethan Griffin, who attends OSU. Lovins is the son of T.C. and Kristy Lovins of Canadian. The CNFR is where the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association crowns individual event champions in saddle bronc riding, bareback riding, bull riding, tie-down roping, steer wrestling, team roping, barrel racing, breakaway roping, and goat tying. National team championships are also awarded to both men’s and women’s teams. Over 400 cowboys and cowgirls from over 100 universities and colleges across the country compete in Casper each year. Contestants compete all year in one of the NIRA’s 11 regions for a chance to rope or ride at the CNFR. Live coverage of the CNFR will be shown on ESPN. For more information, go online to cnfr.com. CCC travel baseball teams complete undefeated seasons

On Thursday, May 26, the Canadian Community Center’s Junior Wildcat travel baseball team (in photo above) wrapped up a 10-0 season and won their championship game, 15-2, against the Shamrock Arnold team. The Senior Wildcat (in photo on facing page) travel team also completed an undefeated season. This was the CCC’s second year for traveling baseball, and their first Highway 83 league and tournament. Both teams had amazing seasons, worked hard, and had fun. The Junior Wildcats were coached by Colby Leach, Porfirio Diaz, and Ronel Saenz. The Wildcats were coached by Victor Meraz and Quinncy Howard. The CCC would like to thank Camden Dorris and Kristen Moudy of Wheeler for reaching out and making this league and tournament possible. Smith Oasis Ranch defends ranch rodeo title

The 34th Annual Coors Cowboy Club Ranch Rodeo was held June 3-4 in Amarillo at the Tri-State Fairgrounds. Fourteen ranches from across the Texas Panhandle, New Mexico, and Oklahoma competed in the event. Hemphill County’s Smith Oasis Ranch was able to defend their first-place title for the second consecutive year by winning the average in wild-cow milking and bronc riding (rider J.D. Reed), and second in trailer loading. The 59-section Smith Oasis Ranch is a cow-calf operation that runs 1,350 momma cows and calves year-round, located east of Canadian along the Canadian River. Team members, pictured here from left to right, are: Travis Hill and Marshall Long of Canadian; J.D. Reed of Spearman; Dusty Drake of Sayre, Oklahoma; J.D. Two local riders compete in Texas High School Rodeo Finals

Two local rodeo riders have qualified for this year’s Texas High School State Rodeo Finals, which began on Monday and will continue through Saturday, June 11, at Abilene’s Taylor Telecom Arena. The state finals rodeo is an annual, weeklong event where high school students across Texas and surrounding states come and compete.
