Hemphill Co. 4-H awards $15,000 in scholarships to 2020 CHS graduates

In the annual Hemphill County 4-H awards ceremony held at Jones Pavilion last Thursday, six members of the Canadian High School Class of 2020 were given $15,000 in scholarships. The scholarship recipients included Alex Smith, Carleigh Thompson, Kyler Mc-Clendon, Paige Perry, Cody Cooke, and Dissy Vargas.

Free COVID-19 testing to begin Friday for WTAMU campus

CANYON—Free COVID-19 testing for the West Texas A&M University campus community will begin Friday, July 24. Tests will be given by appointment between 9 am and 11 am in the Virgil Henson Activities Center. WT has set up a central location for the testing, which will consist of a simple, painless mouth swab monitored by trained personnel.

City prepares bare-bones budget for FY 2020-21

Budget discussions didn’t last long at Monday evening’s City Council meeting. The city had received its certified appraisal values for 2020, reflecting a drop in total taxable values from $130 million last year to $126.4 million now. Sharp declines in sales tax collections—which were down 21 percent in June, and are expected to worsen as the effect of COVID-19 shutdowns becomes clearer—will also have an impact on the city revenues.
