“Canadian High School’s most honored award is the Liske Cup,” Superintendent Lynn Pulliam said, as he announced its recipient following the presentation of diplomas to 72 graduates of the Class of 2024 Saturday morning at Wildcat Stadium.
The award is named after Albert Paul Liske. In 1904, he came to the Texas Panhandle and settled in Canadian. Mr. Liske was one of the movers and shakers who hurried the progress of Canadian and the surrounding area to promote business. He founded the Liske Grain Company and became prominent in the grain business in the Eastern Panhandle.
In 1930, the Liske Grain Company offered a beautiful trophy to the best all-around student at Canadian High School, which has since been given to 93 other graduates. The Liske Cup winner is selected by a committee of high school teachers and administrators. The criteria for the award are scholarship, leadership, citizenship, attitude, and sportsmanship. Participation in school activities and academic achievement is very important in selecting the winner.
“The 94th winner of the Liske Cup has exhibited all these qualities in abundance,” Dr. Pulliam said. “Today’s winner is talented, involved, and has achieved extracurricular success at the district, region, and state levels.”
Luke Flowers participated in, with success, four different sports while at CHS. He exhibited leadership and service in clubs and organizations such Spanish Club, Spirit Club, NHS, Student Council, and was a class officer. He attended Boys State, was in theatre, and earned his FAA drone pilot certification.
Luke has been active in his church youth group and has served 130 hours of community service at Mesa View, Meals on Wheels, the CCC, reading at the public library, working with the fire relief clean up, and fundraising for families in need.
“This student is hard-working, intelligent, and kind—all ingredients of success,” Dr. Pulliam concluded.
Luke is the son of Kevin and Mandy Flowers.
